Simple Nourishing Brown Rice

Simple Nourishing Brown Rice

Fluffy • Savory • Mineral-forward

Ingredients

  • 1 cup dry brown rice

  • 2 cups water

  • 1 cup chicken or vegetable broth

  • 1 tsp butter

  • ½ tsp sea salt (not iodized)

Why Sea Salt (and Why We Avoid Iodized Salt)

Iodized salt is highly refined and treated with anti-caking agents, bleaching chemicals, and synthetic iodine. During this process, the salt loses its natural mineral balance and can interfere with the body’s ability to properly absorb nutrients from whole foods.

Excess intake of synthetic iodine has also been linked to thyroid imbalance in some individuals, particularly when consumed regularly through processed foods.

Sea salt, by contrast, is minimally processed and retains trace minerals like magnesium, potassium, and calcium. It seasons food gently, supports mineral balance, and allows natural flavors to shine—making it a more harmonious choice for everyday cooking.

Instructions

  1. Rinse the rice
Rinse 1 cup of brown rice under cold water until the water runs mostly clear. This removes excess starch and helps prevent gumminess.

  2. Bring to a boil
    In a medium pot, combine:

    • 2 cups water

    • 1 cup chicken or vegetable broth

    • ½ tsp sea salt
      Bring to a rolling boil.

  3. Cook low and slow
Add the rinsed rice, stir once, reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 40–45 minutes, until the rice is tender and the liquid is absorbed.

  4. Finish with richness
Turn off the heat, add 1 tsp butter, cover again, and let steam for 5 minutes.

  5. Fluff and hold
Fluff gently with a fork. Keep covered on very low heat until ready to serve—do not stir repeatedly.
